2nd Playing with Meanings workshop

PwM2 again was part of Joint Ontology Workshops programme JOWO2025, co-located with the 15th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems FOIS 2025 in Catania, Italy. During PwM2 we played a new ontology-based group modelling game,this one based on BFO Basic Formal Ontologies, called Particular Universes. We also previewed an update to our risk communication game, now titled Risky Futures.

RCIS 2024

Exploring ontology-based design interactions for sustainability research

This workshop took place at the 18th Research Challenges in Information Sciences conference, May, 2024 in GuimarĂ£es, Portugal. We had over 50 participants and introduced a range of activities primarily focussed on SESsION, the Social Ecological Systems Integrated ONtology.

An introduction of the Risky Futures (formerly named Risk Response) game played during this workshop, and the group models which were produced during gameplay, was published at the 19th Research Challenges in Information Sciences Conference RCIS2025. The article can be found here.


1st Playing with Meanings workshop

PwM1 joined the Joint Ontology Workshops JOWO 2024, co-located with the 14th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems FOIS 2024 in Enschede, Netherlands. In PwM we introduced several prototype ontology-based group modelling games, one playing with UFO categories (Type Token) and another (Risk Response), a team cardgame with in-game conceptual modelling, for which we used as reference models both SESsION and COVER, the Common Ontology of Values and Risks.

Analysis of the PwM1 workshop as an exploratory study was published at the 44th International Conference on Conceptual Modelling ER2025 where it was Awarded as Best Paper. That publication can be found here.
